June Jazz and Rock Choices
by Milo Miles
3) "Diverse
Voices of Islam" at the Institute of Contemporary Art
( ICA ) Theater, Boston, MA, at 8 p.m. on June 11, 2005. Tickets
are $10. This is the latest in an ongoing series that explores connections and
fresh crossovers in music cultures represented by four local musicians. The
music of Islam is performed by Malian guitarist and vocalist Boubacar Diabate,
Pakistani singer Tanya Jacobs, Oud master Abdul-Wahab Kayyali, and multi-instrumentalist
Raqib Hassan. Combining the storytelling-song tradition of West Africa and Pakistan
with traditional Arabic string improvisation and Sufi-inspired free improvisation,
this quartet will "come together as a group to perform new collectively
composed and arranged works." The results are certain to be interesting;
they could be transcendent.
