Our increasing life expectancy has also brought about a rise in dementia and memory disorders. A large proportion of today's baby boomers, perhaps as high as 4 out of 5, are already at risk for some form of dementia or neurological disorder as they age. These disorders, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and Lou Gehrig's diseases, are socially disruptive, chronic, and require long-term, labor-intensive and expensive care. Faced with a looming financial catastrophe in the United States national healthcare system, Dr. Zaven Khatchaturian has led the call for a national strategic goal to prevent Alzheimer's disease by 2020. Dr. Khatchaturian will explain the nature of these disorders, and will discuss the current state of research, challenges, and hopes for preventing Alzheimer's disease in the next decade.

Dr. Zaven Khachaturian is President of Prevent Alzheimer's Disease by 2020 Inc., Editor-in-Chief of Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association, and Senior Science Advisor to the Alzheimer's Association. He has served as Director of the Office of Alzheimer's Disease Research at the National Institutes of Health, Associate Director of the Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging Program at the National Institute on Aging, and was a member of the FDA Peripheral and Central Nervous System Advisory Committee. During his tenure at the NIH, Khachaturian played a key role in planning, developing, and administering many national programs of research on Alzheimer's disease and brain aging. He is internationally recognized as the chief architect of these U.S. government-supported programs. Khachaturian currently consults on program evaluation, strategic planning, and fundraising. His clients include universities, foundations, pharma/biotech companies, and investment analysts.

The Norman J Field Lectures in Science were established in 1991 in memory of Dr. Norman J Field, and are cosponsored by the Monmouth County Section of the American Chemical Society, Monmouth Regional High School, the Monmouth County School Boards Association, the Rutgers University Chapter of Sigma Xi, an international scientific research society, and by the American Bar Association, Section of Science & Technology Law and Senior Lawyers Division. Dr. Field was widely recognized for his contributions in the area of public education. He maintained a lifelong personal and professional interest in scientific issues. It is hoped that this lecture series will serve to promote similar interest in science and science education among both younger and older members of the community.
